Wine Under $20: Lacrima
On the east side of Tuscany sits the Marche, the Italo-gastrophile's hot region for a few years running (not least since Jamie Oliver killed a pig on camera there in one of his TV shows). One of the most interesting exports is the small production DOCG wine Lacrima di Morro d'Alba, and the 2008 Azienda Giusti Piergiovanni version ($17.95 - LCBO# 180273) is no exception. Black fruit and violets mingle with a rose/Turkish delight/calamine lotion note that is distinct to this distinguished wine. It's both deep in flavour and light in the mouth. Subtle and fragrant, but at home on the table with whatever is being served - there's really no pairing: pasta, duck, steak, even BBQ chicken or ribs - it will fit and compliment. Before the work regime truly sets hold, and things get back to the fall routine, an exotic and firmly different wine seems all too appropriate. Click here to find an LCBO stocking it now.

In Season Now: Ontario Beets

Sometimes it seems like beets are always in season, especially in a salad with chèvre. But Kathleen Mackintosh reports the first sweet beets are being plucked from Ontario soil, and are sweet and crisp enough to shave raw onto any salad. Get'em while they're fresh. Culinarium, Ontario's Locavore Store, sponsors GFR's weekly seasonal produce report.
